Mad Flavor vs. Raisins: 2019 Soul Train Awards Red Carpet

2019 Soul Train Music Awards Red Carpet

Best and Worst Dressed List

-Avaina Nicole

It’s time for the Mad Flavor vs. Raisins count down, where we dish out the awards for the 10 best and the 10 worst dressed off the Soul Train Music Awards Red Carpet and determine who brought enough seasoning for “Mad Flavor” and who put raisins in their potato salad.

The Soul Train Music Awards were held in Las Vegas over the weekend and the Red Carpet is my absolute favorite segment to feature. This year the style on the carpet varied from “glamorous” and “fabulous” to “I don’t own a mirror” and “I literally woke up like this”.   As a guest writer for Mad Flavor TV, my opinions and commentary do not reflect the management and are not representative of Mad Flavor TV. I feel the need to put that out there because I have absolutely no cut-cards. So now that I got the disclaimer out of the way let’s get into the real deal!

I believe it is in my best interest to start with the worst dressed first so…..

  1. Number 10 on the, who put Raisins in their Red Carpet Potato Salad, list is Tisha Campbell.  I know, I know, she was one of the hosts, but all that high waisted pink is not the business. Perhaps a pencil skirt or just no pink at all.  I can see your spanks sweetheart. You look like a hot pink mess, but I still love you!

  1. Number 9 is Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.  I am grouping both of them as one person because they look like the “Men in Black” “Doublemint” twins.  I have never seen two black men look so non-threatening in my whole life. Keep making hits behind the scenes.  I still love ya’ll too.

  1. Coming in at number 8 is Sky Days.  She put raisins in her Red Carpet potato salad with this leopard print preschool ballet outfit and little mermaid hair.  I’m not sure what event she thought she was attending but Halloween was some weeks ago.

  1. Number 7 is Wale.  I love Wale. One of my favorite songs is “On Chill”, but this outfit is not. I’m getting a migraine looking at it.  The shirt is striped, the jacket is striped, and the pants are striped too! Does it look like its moving to you? And what are those things around your ankles?  My eyesight has been permanently damaged.

  1. The number 6 spot goes to Perri Camper and her not quite full coverage breast sling.  I love the hair and her lips are beautifully done, but I am just not feeling the under cleavage.  The risk of another Super Bowl “mishap” was high with this outfit.

  1. It breaks my heart to give the number 5 slot to Trevor Jackson.  I loved him in Superfly, but he looks like he’s wearing his grandmother’s leopard print bathrobe paired with jeans from good will on the Red Carpet. Please take your raisins home.

  1. Number 4 is YK Osiris Guy.  First, I’ve never heard of him.  Second, it seems like he’s never heard of an award show dress code.  Well, maybe the white-washed, destroyed denim outfit would work for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, but not here.

  1. Number 3, wearing a purple jogging outfit so that he looks like an actual raisin, is Luke James.  Again, who’s man’s is this and why is he wearing a $700 sweat suit to an awards show. Are there no boundaries?  What standards are we setting for our children? LOL.

  1. Number 2, sporting rolled up, orange flame pants, and a scully, is BJ The Chicago Kid. I just don’t know what to say. Why? Just why?

  1. And taking the number 1 spot for the most raisins in the Red Carpet potato salad, are Doctur Dot and Johnny Venus. They have not only put raisins in the potato salad, but they have put hotdogs in the greens and candy corn in the mac&cheese.  It is over.

And now for the good stuff!!!!

  1. Number 10 on the 2019 Soul Train Music Awards Red Carpet Mad Flavor list is Anthony Hamilton.  Wearing a classic black leather jacket and leather pants. I’m grateful for pants that are loose enough to leave the goodies to the imagination and boots that don’t look like Keebler elves made them.  He’s a very handsome city cowboy and I’m here for it!

  1. Number 9, for best use of a lace bodysuit, is LeToya Luckett.  I’ve seen so many ratchet lace bodysuit combinations, but this is Not one of them.  Latoya is bringing the elegance by pairing it with a classic black suit jacket and Louboutins.  Yaas honty!

  1. Number 8 is the legendary Morris Day! This man has not lost an ounce of swag. Those white shoes and that silver suit slid down the carpet and screamed “Hallelujah”! That outfit could do the “Bird” without him in it. The song is playing right now, Whaaaat!”

  1. Pulling up at number 7 is Devale Ellis.  This man is FINE regardless, but I am really feeling the Wakanda-esque vibe he’s bringing in this purple suit.  Looks like something T’Challa would wear for an evening with Nakia. Go ahead and cross your arms, I know you feel it.

  1. Number 6 is H.E.R sporting a beautiful knee length kimono.  I love, love, love the simplicity of her hair and make-up. And while the kimono itself is cute, the hoops and the red velvet heels are what give her style “mad flavor”.

  1. It’s getting tougher to choose at this point.  The ladies were going hard this year, but I have to put my girl Issa Rae at number 5.  Her yellow dress with the cut-out waist makes my soul smile! The dress is classy in its simplicity and sexy all at the same time.  The color is uplifting and happy which goes well with her smile. I really want to be her best friend. Come on Issa let’s get mani-pedis and talk about our ex-boyfriends together!

  1. Number 4 is Deborah Cox and her pantsuit with metal belt.  The length of the pants coupled with the plunging neckline bring the drama, while the bling is EVERYTHING!  I can’t wear something like that because I get distracted too easily. I want to literally run my hand down the side and change it all to sparkle and then change it back. I’d be playing with my outfit the entire awards ceremony. But I want it! And Deborah is working it!

  1. Number 3 is Terri J Vaugn.  I normally don’t like the whole see through lace bodice thing because the fabric underneath is always a shade of white woman, but the hem of this gown makes up for it. Simply beautiful!

  1. Runner-up on the Mad Flavor list, coming in at number 2, is the coral flow of Lyric Anderson.  Her hair is pulled back to display her gorgeous face not overdone with make-up. And the dress is soft, flowing, and sexy giving us full view of both legs and electric blue stilettos!  I. Am. Not. Mad. At. Her!

  1. At the number 1 spot of our Mad Flavor count down is Sinqua Walls!  He has put so much seasoning on with this suit that we can just top here.  End of the line, everybody off the bus. Nobody else could even hold this suit on a hanger; forget about wearing it, but he is KILLING IT! That is how you bring “Mad Flavor”!
