2023 NAACP Image Awards Gold Carpet

-Malik Pollard

The celebrity style at this year’s 54th NAACP Image Awards red carpet was a mix bag for us. The NAACP Image Awards has long been considered the black version of the Oscars and Grammys, but some people mustve have missed the “Black Tie” memo and came a little too casual for our taste. Athletic leisure has no place at the NAACP Image Awards. I don’t care how progressive you trying to be.

Nonetheless, here are some of our absolute favorite looks from the 54th NAACP Image Awards

  1. Marsai Martin – We all have watched Marsai grow on screen to the beautiful young woman she is becoming.  We loved this simple, but regal dress by Christian Siriano with blue puffs around her shoulders and waist. Minimal silver jewelry allowed the asymmetrical blue details to pop; And her pose on the Gold Carpet  is simple sophistication

        1. J. Alphonse Nicholson & Nicco Annan– We see hues of Blue…And we think to ourselves, what a wonderful world (LOL). So the question we have for these two P-Valley stars is, “was this synchronization planned or merely coincidence?”

  1. Kyla Pratt – Ms. Pratt, what is your secret to the fountain of youth? Even your hands are aging in reverese. Clearly Kyla Pratt is aging Benjamin Button style and uses a great moisturizer on her hands (just don’t look at her feet). She looks absolutely fabulous on the Gold Carpet (just don’t look at her feet).

  1. Skyh Black – Classic Tuxedo look with an edgy pop of colors with the Tuxedo Jacket. We likes, we likes Mr. Black. You giving us 007 vibes with a mix of Shaft. “Shut You Mouf.”

  1. BODY – I mean Serena Williams wore this dress! That’s it! Nothing left to say. This is our top 10, and this body, excuse me dress, deserves to be inlcuded.

  1. Sheryl Lee Ralph – Is Sheryl reaching “Auntie Sheryl” status in Hollywood? You know how Patti Labelle is “Auntie Patti” and “Momma Patti”. It really is a prestigious honor in the Black Community to reach Auntie status because is comes with the utmost respect of others, and the ‘youngins’ start to emulate your style, grace, and actions.  I for one would love to see more African prints and designers represented on the Red Carpet just as Ms. Ralph gave us with this beaded, mermaid silhouette designed by Ghanaian fashion house Pistis. The orange and brown ensemble was paired with dangling, circular earrings and a simple makeup look.

  1. Brandee Evans – Dont think that Mercedes don’t know how to slay a Red Carpet. Everytime shoe hits a carpet, she makes a statement with her outfit and natural hair choices. Evans’ strapless dress was made of ivory-colored lace in a high-low silhouette. She topped the look off with a crown of hair, which wrapped around her forehead in an intricate pattern.

  1. Janelle Monae – Janelle Monae NEVER misses the mark on a Red Carpet, Gold Carpet, Black Carpet, ANY carpet. This red dress is sleek, and sexy. Notice she kept it sexy and didnt distract with a lot of accessories. Clearly she is commanding all attention of her and that leg with that slit all the way up her thigh.

  1. Method Man – So we were trying to figure out what color Method Man’s velvet suit, and we carefully asked a few women. Needless to say, the only answers that the women we asked ha to offer was “not a color at all”. All we wanted to know is was it pink, baby pink, Almond, Putty, Pastel Pink; And yes, there are really that many shades of pink. Then the one woman that didn’t answer with “Gorgeous”, “Handsome” or “Damn” said, “It’s Iridescent Pink.” So we looked it up, and hmm, it might just be!

  1. Zendaya – AND THE WINNER IS…Zendaya! She had a killler year acting, producing, and directing; And she wearing a killer vintage dress by Versace. Perfection! This is a Celebration of Black Excellence during Black History Month. Zendaya has set the bar high, now get in formation!
